A superb example of a NINETEENTH CENTURY PUZZLE in complete original form. The six master printed maps are the key to the six possible puzzles requiring knowledge of geography to piece each together. The six represent a double hemisphere world map, and five further ones of the continents. It is possible to date them from the geography depicted to post 1853 but earlier than 1867 and most likely pre-American Civil War. Provenance: with the original shops label pasted inside the lid “Bazar de L’Industrie Magasin de Bijouterie & Orfevrerie Louis Rossignol & Cie Chaux-de-Fonds …”; private English collection since the 1980s. Hannas, Linda. (1980). ‘When maps were cut into pieces’, in ‘The Map Collector’ no. 12 pp. 18-21.
