L’Abbé Jean- Baptiste Louis Clouet (b.1730) was a geographer at the Academie Royale des Sciences de Rouen. He wrote a number of works on geography. His most famous atlas is however the ‘Geographie Moderne’ first issued in 1767, an example of which is offered here. The first few plates depict various hemispheres and world-systems. All of the maps bear engraved text in the side panels. There were later editions in 1780, 1787, 1791 and 1793. The Library of Congress possess examples of three editions, the British Library do not have any. A good example of a rare edition. Phillips 661, 673 & 3519 (none are this issue); not in Shirley ‘Atlases in the British Library’.

Folio (430 x 330 mm.), full contemporary mottled calf, rebacked preserving the original spine, raised bands with ornate gilt ruled compartments, red calf gilt title label. With engraved title page by Berthault, engraved dedication, 68 double page plates all in full early wash colour and all numbered (64 repeated), and a single page list of contents. Some light marks on a few plates, most notable on plts. 10, Italy, Bas Rhin, Haute Saxe, Westphalie, Hollande, Arabie with some repair, Tartarie with printers crease on left, small lower centrefold split to Europe, Bas Rhin, some manuscript notations in the margin to four maps.
