This new and important edition of Ptolemy in Latin is by Sebastian Münster (1488-1552). The revised text by Münster is based on the Willibald Pirckheimer Latin translation of 1535 by Michael Servetus. Münster was a geographer, mathematician and professor at Basle University. Along with Abraham Ortelius 30 years later he was one of the first publishers to identify his sources and authorities. His maps were not superseded for influence until those of Ortelius. Notable maps include the modern world map in its first state which marks and names the Northwest passage, also naming the Northern part of North America, ‘Terra nova sive de Bacalhos’ a reference to the cod fishing banks off Newfoundland. A desirable map which was replaced in 1550. The important map of America in first state, that of Scandinavia based on Jacob Ziegler’s of 1532. Munster also wrote the encyclopaedic ‘Cosmographia Universalis’ in 1544 which contained the same woodcut maps.
