In 1641 Catalonia revolted against the Spanish Crown and Louis XIII of France entered the war in support of the Spanish Royal family. At the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659 the French took possession of Roussillon where it has remained ever since. This map from an unknown source celebrates that treaty and displays the capital of Perpignan upper centre with the nearby Fort of Salces enlarged. Various ships are depicted crowding the coastline. The engraver is identified as ‘I. E. Lasne’ of whom there is no record in Tooley’s Dictionary of Mapmakers however one of that name is listed in Benezit’s extensive work on French engravers. Unfortunately he died in 1645. The fact that he has the right name, and that he worked in southern France in Bordeaux, Lyon and Toulouse indicates that this work might be the hand of an unknown son. The imprint reads “Du Camp de L’armee Par Vostre Tres humb et Serviteur I. F. Lasne F. Avec privilege”.
