This work contains the first edition of the ‘Prospect’. Following the death of George Humble in 1640 the publishing business was inherited by his son William. He either continued or began the project of producing a similar miniature version of the folio ‘Prospect’ or world atlas first published by his father in 1626. It was printed by Miles Fletcher. A unique example of the ‘Prospect’ exists with the title page dated 1626 in error. In it, the two plates of the world and America bear the date 1642. It seems as if the completion of the work was delayed by the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642 and was finally published the year it ended, 1646. The new plates were all engraved by an aged Pieter van den Keere after those of Speed. The British section lacks a date but can be differentiated from earlier ones by the type setting. Burden (2007); Shirley (2004) T.Kee 2a and T.Kee 1f; Skelton (1970) 37; STC (1986) 23035; Wing (1945-51) S4882.
SPEED, John
England Wales Scotland and Ireland Described [with 'Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World']
William Humble, London, 1646
Two works in one oblong octavo volume (105 x 165 mm.), full modern calf, gilt red calf label to the spine, raised bands gilt ruled. With ‘Table to Maps’ before the ‘Prospect’ followed by 20 engraved maps of the world, blank leaf between the sections followed by an engraved title page of ‘England Wales …’, a further 63 engraved maps of the British Isles including the two folding. Lacking title to the Prospect, text p. 3 with tear repaired, most maps with good margins, the folding map of the British Isles damaged as often the case as is Yorkshire which is backed. Occasional light staining, margins trimmed as is often the case just affecting the images of Hungary, Poland and Tartary in the ‘Prospect’ and Warwick and Scotland. That of Nottinghamshire mis-bound between Lincolnshire map and text.
