This new woodblock map of the American continent was first published in the ‘Cosmographey’ by Sebastian Munster (1489‐1552) in 1588. The work itself was first published by Henri Petri in 1544, and it was the first German language description of the world. He died in 1679 and later editions including this from the 1614 one was issued by his son, Sebastian (1546‐1627). Munster’s original map from 1540 was quickly out of date and replaced with this more up to date one. The cartographic source was Abraham Ortelius’ map of the continent issued in 1570 as can be seen by the western ‘bulge’ to the southwest coast of South America. It was only the year before, in 1587 that Ortelius replaced his plate with another removing this feature from the coast of Chile. Familiar features included the southern continent below. Provenance: Juan and Peggy Rada Collection. Burden (1996-2007) no. 67; ‘The A. E. Nordenskiöld Collection’ no. 159 (1628 edition); Ruland (1962); Sabin (1868) 51393.
