Dedication copy from Mgr. Puginier who we assume is Bishop Paul-Francois Puginier (1835-92), the French missionary and key figure in the establishment and expansion of French rule in Vietnam. The licence on the verso of the half title states: Imprimatur: Paulus Fr. Puginier, and is dated 1879). This is the first edition. The French introduced Western typographic printing methods into Vietnam (Cochinchina) in the 1860’s. With text in Latin and Annamese. This is an early example of Quoc ngu printing in Tonkin. Inserted loosely is one folding watercolour ‘Plan Géneral de la Résidence de Hai-Duonc’. Cordier BI 2289.
