Thomas Dugdale was an antiquarian who was responsible for the ‘Curiosities of Great Britain’. The work was issued with two distinct sets of maps. The first utilised those maps from the Cole and Roper atlas of 1810. This second series used a new set of maps engraved by John Archer and was first published in 1842. All examples lack a printed date of publication. This one is dated to c.1857 from an analysis of the railways present, namely the presence of a one in Nottinghamshire opened 3 October 1857. Provenance: manuscript ownership inscription inside front cover of volume one dated 1869; private English collection. Beresiner pp. 46-7; Carroll no. 112.

Quarto (245 x 175 mm.), two volumes, contemporary half morocco, gilt ruled, blue cloth boards, blind embossed. With ornate ruled spine, raised bands and five panels containing ornate blind design. Marbled endpapers. With 58 early hand coloured steel engraved maps and 130 steel engraved prints. Some light foxing, some maps with light print offset. A fine set.
