This is a superb example of the first edition with the general and county maps dated 1741. It is the first pocket size English county atlas published in the eighteenth century. It is surprising it took so long considering the runaway success of the road book ‘Britannia Depicta’ of 1720. The first edition of the atlas, in its four variants, was on sale for only a short time; within two or three months a new edition was published. Provenance: bookplate of William Charles de Meuron, Earl Fitzwilliam, of Wentworth Woodhouse, Yorkshire, pasted inside front cover; dispersed Sotheby’s 1 March 1948 to Charles Traylen; Dominic Winter Auction 5 September 2007 lot 413. Hodson (1984-97) I no. 188 second issue; Shirley (2004) T.Bad 1d.
