The first edition, second state with the additional ‘Explication’ in English. Engraved by Thomas Kitchen this rare map was issued at the time of the French and Indian War. Derived from the landmark map by John Mitchell published in the same year. A legend explains that the map is coloured according to territory possessed by the French and the English. It was clearly intended for the continental market as it is in French, commonly used throughout Europe. Despite this it depicts the English claims extending to the Mississippi River. The tone of language used is less aggressive than contemporary English cartographers. For instance where other English cartographers would talk of ‘encroachments’, Palairet talks of ‘disputed’ lands. The map was clearly intended for a more neutral market. This is an interesting example of English propaganda. Palairet was most probably a Huguenot who fled France after the repeal of the Edict of Nantes. A London agent of the Dutch States-General and the author of several works, he was also the French tutor of King George II’s children. Shirley (2004) T.PAL 1a no. 14; Stevens & Tree (1967) 18b.
