FIRST KNOWN MAP TO RECOGNISE THE SIKH TERRITORY. A rare early engraved map of India by the mapmaker Rigobert Bonne (1727-95) is from the ‘Atlas Encyclopédique’. Bonne was an engineer, mathematician and cartographer. He succeeded Bellin as the hydrographer at the Depot de la Marine. This map is notable for being the first known to recognise the Sikh territory in the Punjab Lahore region. The word Schiecks on the map refers to the Sikhs. Gole 78a.
