‘The Weekly Dispatch’ newspaper between the years 1856 and 1862 included in each edition a map of a part of the world. During this period a total of 118 maps were issued. The maps bear the distinctive sign of a half globe with the figure of Mercury above. The engravers varied but included John Dower and Edward Weller. In 1863 ‘The Dispatch Atlas’ was published which contained a series of English county maps. The two were combined in 1865 as ‘Cassell’s Complete Atlas’. With the publishers stamp in the margin dated 31 January 1858. The map extends from the Oregon border at Cape Blanco southwards to the tip of Baja California and eastwards to the continental divide and Rio Grande valley. A large Utah Territory extends from California to the continental divide and is now occupied by the states of Nevada and much of Colorado. To its south New Mexico Territory takes in all of present day Arizona to. Settled areas particularly in California are recorded as are numerous Indian tribes and forts. A number of significant early trails are drawn. “This map is an excellent representation of the country” (Wheat). Beresiner pp. 85-7; refer Carroll no. 120; Wheat, C.I. (Trans Mississippi West) 942.
