Carington Bowles (1724-93) published a series of ‘Bowles’s New Pocket …’ maps. Issued separately many were later included in ‘Bowles’s Universal Atlas’ first published in 1780. This particular map was not included in the atlas but does fall in the school of his separately published folding maps. This is a travelling map of England and Wales whose information is most likely drawn from Daniel Paterson (1738-1825) who was commissioned in the Army in 1765 and served in the Quartermaster General’s department until 1812. The first edition of Paterson’s Roads appeared in 1771. This is an example of what appears to be the second edition dated 20 May 1782. There was a further edition in 1788. The distance between points in miles is shown beside the road with distance from London in bolder figures by each major town. With a fine ornate title cartouche upper right depicting a traveller on England’s roads. Carroll (1996) pp. 393-8; Tooley (1999-2004); Worms & Baynton-Williams (2011).
