This map covers the region of Basle on the Rhine river border between Germany, Switzerland and France. This is the first of two plates on the region to accompany Abraham Ortelius’ ‘Theatrum Orbis Terrarum’, the world’s first uniform atlas. This issue bears Spanish text to the verso, paginated 74 it is unrecorded in Van den Broecke. The map is derived from Sebastian Munster’s two part map of the region first published in 1538.
