Abbe Grenet (1750-) was a geographer and professor at the college in Lisieux, France. The ‘Atlas Portatif a l’Usage des Colleges’ was first published in Amsterdam to accompany the ‘Histoire Philosophique et Politique’ about 1773 and was published by E. van Harrevelt. The maps are based on the work of Rigobert Bonne (1727-95) and drawn by Eustache Herrison (1759-) who was his pupil. They are engraved largely by Perrier and Gaspard Andre, the latter providing the writing. This example bears maps dating from 1779-82, curiously they also include the month. The atlas is dedicated to the University of Paris. Provenance: with booksellers label pasted inside upper cover of Barre in Rouen. Phillips (1909-) 8456; Shirley (2004) T.Bonn 2a & 4a; Tooley’s Dictionary (1999-2004).
