This is a fine example of the second edition of William Faden’s atlas first published in 1798. Indeed the title page of this issue is still dated 1798. What determines the later issue is the date 1804 on two maps, those of France and Southern Germany. Later editions were published in 1819 and 1821, both with 58 maps, then by James Wyld in 1836. The 55 maps here are made up of 44 modern and 11 ancient ones. Faden joined the firm of Thomas Jefferys two years after Jefferys death in 1771. By 1783 he was in control of the firm. He is particularly noted for undertaking new surveys and for publishing foreign works in England.
