Accompanying this Spanish translation of Giovanni Botero’s popular ‘Relationi Universali’ were five newly engraved maps of the world and four continents. The book was a treatise on the political and geographical state of the world. The map of Asia is derived from that of Abraham Ortelius in 1570. The engraver is Hernando de Solis and the maps are rarely found in the book, which is itself scarce. The inscription on the map of America showed that it was made in the year 1598 although the two-part book appeared in 1603. The second of these parts is, however, dated 1599 and it is possible that an edition of this part alone occurred in that year. Another explanation could be the fact that it was published by the heirs of Diego Fernandez de Cordova, his death possibly causing the delay. Borba de Moraes (1958) vol. 1, p. 100; Burden (1996) 129; John Carter Brown Library (1980-82) no. 603.17; Sabin (1868) no. 6809/ Vindel (1955) pp. 55-9.
