A rare English produced map of the world in its first finished state. John Thornton likely produced this map for inclusion in the “Atlas Maritimus or the Sea Atlas”. It is derived from the very rare world map by Robert Morden and William Berry, c.1676. A dedication to Sir James Hayes, Kt., the deputy-governor of the Hudson’s Bay Company appears upper right. Observations of the variations of the compass either side of the Straits of Magellan are noted. These occurred during the voyage of Sir John Narborough in 1670. The map is first referred to in the Term Catalogues for May 1683. A proof state exists at the John Carter Brown Library in which the engravers signature is lacking as are several decorative features. This is an example of the first true published state, there were two later ones. Shirley, R. “The Mapping of the World” #521. 2nd state.
