This extremely rare map of Virginia and the Carolinas appeared in Sir William Keith’s “History of the British Plantations in America … Containing the History of Virginia” published in London, 1738. This first volume on Virginia was to be the first of a series of books on the English plantations. It turned out to to be the only one published. The author was Governor of Virginia from 1717-26. The map extends from Delaware bay in the north to the Cape Fear River focusing on Virginia and North Carolina. The map is dedicated to Thomas Lord Fairfax who at the time owned much of the northern neck of Virginia. Surveys had been carried out to determine the extent of his grant which was a contentious issue at the time. John Warner’s map produced at the behest of Fairfax was first published in 1737. Despite not having the same detail or displaying any border’s the map clearly draws on its cartography. One of the first printed maps to do so. Church 930; Sabin 37240.
