Only ONE RECORDED EXAMPLE of this large two sheet map in remarkable detail by Dickinson survives. John Dickinson (1699-1778) was a member of a prominent eighteenth century family of surveyors from Yorkshire. The majority of his surviving work covers the north of England. The area covered extends from Sheffield in the south to Wakefield and Pontefract in the north. It is engraved by Richard Parr (fl.1723-51). The left side is dominated by a large table listing all the towns, villages and Gentleman’s Seats in alphabetical order. Each bears a number to the left which helps to locate them on the map, the left side being numbered. All Seats in the table bear the owners name next to them. An Explanation appears in an ornate cartouche upper right with a further table below listing notable places on the map. The map was supported by the Charles Watson-Wentworth the second Marquis of Rockingham (1730-82) who is buried in the choir of York Minster. Only one surviving example could be traced that being in the British Library. Eden “Dictionary of Land Surveyors” p. 84; Rodger (1972) no. 509; Tooley Dictionary of Mapmakers.
