The market for sea charts in England in 1653 was dominated by the Dutch mapmakers. This work represents one of the very earliest English attempts to break that monopoly. “The work is accompanied by pilotage instructions, tables of seamen’s wages by rank, entitlement to prize-money, sick pay etc.” (Wardington Catalogue). On the title-page, Jenner states “any man may be as experienced in the Sea-Coast by this Card, as they have been by Land, by the six Mapps of England wherein the Villages and smallest Places were known to travell unto them, and where the Land Armies did lye”.
