An attractive map of Normandy which displays the Channel Islands in a separate inset unlike most earlier maps of the region. The common error of the day of displaying an oversized Guernsey in relation to that of Jersey is repeated. The inset is set within a very large cartouche which also holds the title. To its left is a portion of the English coast displaying the Isle of Wight and the Dorset coast. The French coast extends from Mont St. Michel in Brittany to Boulogne in Picardy. Other than the size of the cartouche, it is very similar in layout to that of Frederick de Wit from c.1705. It is engraved by his son-in-law Tobias Conrad Lotter (1717-77) whose imprint is found in the lower left margin.

Matthaus Seutter (1678-c.1757) was an engraver, globe maker, and map publisher in Augsburg where he was born and died. He was apprenticed to Johann Baptist Homann, and his influences can be clearly seen in his work. Although he became Homann’s main competitor his work was largely not original. He was though named Imperial Geographer to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI in 1731. He married three times and had thirteen children! Only four of them joined the firm, his son-in-law Tobias Conrad Lotter continued the firm after his death. An uncommon map.
