A fine early lithograph of a rowing scene on the Isis at Oxford from around 1880 by William MacKenzie. The ‘Isis’ is a Latin derived name for the River Thames and refers to the stretch of the river through the city of Oxford. Rowing was a well-established pastime by 1880, especially amongst the colleges and universities. The scene is likely taken at Christ Church Meadow, Oxford. William MacKenzie was active as a publisher from 1866 to 1895. This view was included in some examples of the undated ‘British Field Sports’ by Henry Downes Miles.
