A fine early woodcut map of the British Isles by Giuseppe Rosaccio (c.1530-1620) first published in ‘Il Mondo’ in Florence in 1595. The little geography book was accompanied by several small maps. From the typesetting on the verso, we can determine that this example is from an edition in 1629 or later. Shirley states that the cartography is roughly derived from contemporary portolan charts. Rosaccio was an Italian cosmographer. He produced a large ten-sheet world map, edited an edition of Ptolemy’s ‘Geographia’ in 1598, amongst other works. The nomenclature is clear and includes ‘Dver’, ‘Antona’ (Southampton), ‘Tiores’ (Torquay) along the south coast. Wales displays ‘Arforda’ (Haverford). Provenance: Clive A. Burden Ltd. Shirley (1991) 188; Shirley (2004) T.Ros 1a no. 4; Tooley’s Dictionary (1999-2004).
