A fine aquatint engraving looking southeast up the river Seine at the Jardin des Tuileries on the left with the Pont Royal in the distance. Behind that just visible is the Notre Dame. The artist is Michel-Francois Damame-Demartrais who is noted for his work on Russia. It comes from ‘Paris et ses Alentours’ published by Paul André Basset (1785 – 1819), a Parisian print publisher, printseller, and wallpaper manufacturer. The son of André Basset, he married in 1787. His premises were at the corner of Rue St. Jacques and Rue des Mathurins. The area around the Rue St. Jacques included almost everyone involved in the publishing industry in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. He was most active during the revolutionary period in France. He retired in 1819. The business originally founded in 1720, was continued by various members of the family at same address before disappearing sometime after 1865.
