A very attractive double hemisphere world map by the relatively unknown cartographer David Funcke (1642-c.1705). He was an engraver and publisher based in Nuremberg, Germany. Much of his production was of maps of regions in Germany and he was one of the earliest to commission work from Johann Baptist Homann. It is derived from Frederick de Wit’s earlier world map of 1668 and includes California as an island. Typical of the period is the illustration of New Holland or Australia and New Zealand with incomplete coastlines. Top and bottom are two smaller polar hemispherical maps. The map is extensively decorated. Shirley (1993) 616, first state; Tooley’s Dictionary (1999-2004).
