Martin Waldseemuller was the geographer behind one of the early schools to study cartography, that at St. Die. He was the author of the wall map of 1507 which named America for the first time. In that same year it is believed he completed the maps for an edition of Ptolemy’s ‘Geography’, it was not until 1513, though for reasons unknown, that it was published. The editors of the work were Jacob Eszler and George Ubelin and it was printed by Joannes Schott. Waldseemuller’s woodblock maps are amongst some of the most sought after of Ptolemy’s maps. This is one of the maps in the atlas to use letterpress in the margins and for some of the placenames. This along with some of the other maps in the atlas which use a similar process has been argued as evidence for an early preparation from 1505-07. This example is from the rarer second edition of 1520 as determined by the omission of a title above the map and other variations. Karrow, R.W. (16 c.) 80/6; Nordenskiold 207 no. 22; Pastoureau Ptolemee A; Shirley ‘British Isles’ no. 10; Shirley BL T.Ptol-6a; Stevens (1928) pp. 6-13, 72-9.
