A fascinating little road book or Itinerary of the Great North Road. A small sepia road map appears on the left side whilst opposite are a list of towns, village or Inns with accompanying distances. Each bears a list of places of interest along the way with brief description. The beginning and the end of the book bear extensive adverts for appropriate produce. The partnership between Mawson, Swan and Morgan began in 1878. An interesting anecdote is that Swan was patented Bromide paper in 1879 for photographic use, the type most commonly used to this day. In 1860 Swan devised a primitive electric lightbulb which did not work long due to the difficulties of a poor vacuum. It was his basic design that Thomas Edison used twenty years later! A fascinating little work.
