A very rare map by S. Halle who is described by Tooley as an engraver but was also a mapmaker. It is known that he worked at the Prussian Royal Academy with Daniel Sotzmann (1754-1840). Its origins are unknown but it appears to be the earliest printed map on a circular projection to refer to Australia as ‘the fifth continent’. It is derived from the southern hemisphere map from accounts of Captain James Cook and his attempt to reach the South Pole in the Second Voyage from 1772-1775. It illustrates the tracks of the Resolution. An attractive map in full original colour, it is unusually decorated with a garland of leaves draped across the upper half. The individual continents are coloured keyed below. We have not been able to identify another example.
