‘Second edition’, revised and enlarged. There are three different collations shown on the ESTC for this 1623 dated edition. This example is closest to ESTC S120483 in pagination. John Speed’s (c.1552-1629) magnum opus is this ‘History of Great Britaine’ first published in 1611. It is considered the finest of its type printed to date. This example is Browne Willis’ copy, according to Wikipedia he was “an antiquary, author, numismatist and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1705 to 1708.” Born in Dorset, he went to Christ Church, Oxford and then entered the Inner Temple in 1700. He joined the Society of Antiquaries in 1718. Provenance: manuscript ownership inscription of Browne Willis (1682-1760), Whaddon Hall & again dated 1704 on p. 155; manuscript inscription inside upper board “Neath Museum Library 1849”; Heather Lawrence, the noted bibliographer whose unpublished work was the life of Speed; Ash Rare Books 1990; private English collection.
