John Cary (c.1754-1835) and descendants were possibly the most prolific publishers of cartography around the turn of the nineteenth century. Cary is noted for the clarity of detail in his maps and was the first to use the Greenwich meridian. Cary was apprenticed to William Palmer from 1770-7. His very earliest works were engravings for or publications in partnership with others. His first sole publication was a very rare road book displaying the route from London to Falmouth published in 1784. This was followed in 1786 by three works. On the 1 January he published the ‘Survey of Middlesex which he expanded with further maps to publish as ‘Fifteen Miles round London’ on the 20 June. That same day he also published this work of ‘Ten Miles round Hampton Court and Richmond’. It extends from Uxbridge, Langley and Fulmer in the north west to Woking in the south west. It extends eastwards to take in all of the city of London and south beyond Croydon. All are in lovely early colour and display a wealth of information. Cary states on the title the detail includes “The Roads, Rivers, Woods and Commons; as well as Every Market Town, Village & c. are distinguished; And every Seat shewn with the Name of the Possessor”. Scarce. Beresiner pp. 80-2; Fordham ‘Cary’ pp. 21; Fordham ‘Roads’ p. 38.
