Robert Wilkinson (d.c.1825) collaborated with Bowles and Carver before launching on his own. In 1795 he first published a ‘General Atlas’ to which shortly after this accompanying ‘Atlas Classica’ was first published. It is dated to c.1802 as the dated maps vary from 1796-1802. It included 37 maps, a second expanded edition was issued in 1808 which is that offered here with 46 maps. The example of this edition at the Sotheby’s auction of the Wardington collection fetched £1,750. Provenance: manuscript ownership inscription of Emilie Schnell on front free endpaper.
