Although this example lacks all the maps the atlas is extremely rare. Only one example is known to have appeared at auction in the last 30 years. The first two volumes are devoted to Europe with the following three on Asia, Africa and America each. Initially the atlas was published in monthly parts. There was originally planned a sixth volume to be devoted to the British Isles. This did not appear in print until 1724 under the title of ‘A New Description of England and Wales’. Quarto (220 x 170 mm.), five volumes each in full contemporary blind panelled calf with ornate blind tooling. Ribbed spines with gilt calf title label to each, worn. Lacking all maps. Some foxing and browning through the text as usual, a very rare atlas.
