A good example of one of the best of the early county topographies. Although commonly assigned to Daniel King (c.1616-1664) a painter and engraver born in Chester, the work was actually compiled by Samuel Lee, Rouge Dragon Pursuivant, William Smith and William Webb. The book draws on a number of talents of the day not least the great engraver Wenceslaus Hollar. The text for the work draws on a number of contemporary sources, many in manuscript. Towards the end of the book is a section on the Isle of Man written by James Chaloner (c.1602-60). In 1652 the island had been given to Lord Fairfax in thanks for his services as Commander of the Parliament’s forces during the English Civil War. He sent Chaloner to act on his behalf who later became its Governor. Bibliotheca Monensis pp. 8-10 Upcott, vol.i, pp 61-3; Wing K488.
