This is an attractive example of the first edition with the general and county maps dated 1741. It is the first pocket size English county atlas published in the eighteenth century. It is surprising it took so long considering the runaway success of the road book ‘Britannia Depicta’ of 1720. The first edition of the atlas, in its four variants, was on sale for only a short time; within two or three months a new edition was published. Octavo (165 x 100 mm.), full early mottled calf, gilt ruled. Spine with raised bands, panels with very ornate gilt decoration, red calf gilt title pasted to spine. With engraved title (minor paper crease) and dedication, 5 engraved tables, 6 general and 40 county maps, engraved throughout. All in beautiful CONTEMPORARY FULL WASH COLOUR. Complete with two free blank leaves inside both covers. A very good example.
