This is a superb example of the first edition with the general and county maps dated 1741. There is an earlier variant lacking the plate numbers 8 & 9 respectively to Cambridgeshire and Cheshire. It is the first pocket size English county atlas published in the eighteenth century. It is surprising it took so long considering the runaway success of the ‘Britannia Depicta’ of 1720. ‘The first edition of the atlas, in its four variants, was on sale for only a short time; within two or three months a new edition was published’. Hodson I no. 188 second issue.
