The maps for Samuel Lewis’ ‘Topographical Dictionary’ are often known as Creighton-Walker’s. Both R. Creighton and John and Charles Walker were engravers, little is known about the former. These maps were produced to accompany a series of topographical works by Samuel Lewis about whom we also know little. We know of him as a cartographer and publisher who flourished in the 1830s. The ‘Topographical Dictionary’ covered England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. That of England and Wales was first published in 1831 and ran to four volumes. The names of the boundaries were added to the maps for this fourth edition in 1840. The Welsh volumes appeared in 1833, those of Ireland in 1837. Beresiner pp. 144-148; Carroll 93; Chubb 433.
