Robert Morden is arguably best known for the series of maps he produced for the first edition of Dr. Edmund Gibson’s translation of William Camden’s ‘Britannia’. Gibson (1669-1748) had first projected the work in 1692 when a Fellow of Queen’s College, Oxford. He turned to Morden (d.1703) to provide the maps. His sources are varied and are analysed by Skelton. Although the atlas ran to later editions in 1722, c.1730, 1753 and 1772 the first has always been the most desirable. A rare example in lovely early outline colour unfortunately marred by the water staining. Provenance: private English collection for the last 40 years. Folio (410 x 240 mm.), modern half calf, with cloth boards, blind ruled. Spine with gilt embossed title. Engraved portrait of Camden by R. White, title within double rule border, both with water staining and damage, 7 engraved general maps and 43 double page county maps by Robert Morden all in EARLY OUTLINE COLOUR, 8 engraved plates of coins, engraved and woodcut illustrations. The map of Hertfordshire is slightly shaved, as is often the case, the other larger plates are all untrimmed. Water stained throughout, not too badly on a number of maps.
