This lovely miniature atlas details the roads of France. The pages 69, 81 and 82 display roads to London from Dover, New Haven and Portsmouth respectively. Further leaves display the roads to Amsterdam and Brussels. The title page curiously states ‘Derniere Edition’ or last edition although research shows that editions can be found dated between 1771 and 1790. Louis Charles Desnos (1725-1805) was a noted mapmaker, globe maker and publisher in Paris. Provenance: with pasted in bookplate of ‘Hobart’ on front flyleaf. Shirley BL T.DESN-5b.

Vegisimo-quarto (115 x 60 mm.), full contemporary French red morocco, gilt panelled, very ornate gilt compartments to the spine with title on calf label. Gilt edged. With engraved frontispiece, engraved title page, double-page map of France, double-page plan of Paris and 156 early hand coloured maps, a Table des Routes and three pages of adverts all numbered to 176.
