AN UNRECORDED STATE. This example is between Hodson’s states 3 and 4. Some of the alterations Hodson describes are included, but notably absent from his fourth state is the reference to the 18th market town Sawbridgeworth, referring instead to 17. Hundreds and new roads are also not yet engraved. These are all progressional alterations, the interesting feature is two alterations made and changed again for the fourth state. The title here is “Hartfordshire”, not “Hertfordshire” as it was before AND after. Also the plate number is altered from 20 before, to 22 here, and then back to 19 after. Reading Hodson atlases 210 tells us that in 1765 Jefferys catalogue lists “The Small English Atlas … The 2d. Edition, with two new Maps, one of the Rivers and Sea-Ports Towns and Harbours; the other of all the Cross Roads through the Kingdom”. We know that Jefferys had a preference for spelling the county Hartfordshire so if can be assumed that he was behind this alteration. This is re-enforced by the two additional maps which might have required a re-numbering of the plates moving Hertfordshire from 20 to 22. No known copy of this edition survives, but clearly this map is from this issue. Jefferys became bankrupt in 1766, and died in 1771. The plates were acquired by Robert Sayer who we know preferred Hertfordshire and clearly he altered the title back. Similarly he did not utilise the two extra plates requiring a plate number change. Refer Hodson 35 between state 3 & 4; refer Hodson Atlases 210.
