A fine copper engraved map of the city of Valletta, Malta, from “Histoire des Chevaliers de l’Ordre de S. Iean de Jerusalem” by Jean Baudoin. Nearby are Borgo, Sanglea di Sto. Michele, and the church of St. Salvator, these are known as the Three Cities. The inset in the lower left corner displays a map of Malta and Gozo. It is engraved by Henry Raignauld whose name is found in the cartouche which also refers to the author J. Douillier. In the upper right are the coat of arms of the “Order of St. John of Jerusalem” with three fleur-de-lys surmounted by a crown and with the eight pointed cross behind. Lower centre is a second coat of arms of the bishop of Nicosia, showing a lion with three stars above and three crescent moons above that. The whole is decorated with ships. The book is an uncommon work which features the history of the Order of St. John. Mason ‘Maps of Malta in the Order of St. John’ no. 27.
