The next Dutch chart maker to enter the field of maritime atlases after Waghenaer, Blaeu, Jansson, and Colom, was Theunis (or Anthonie) Jacobsz (1606/7-50). He would later take the family name of Lootsman to differentiate himself from other similarly named printers. Like earlier charts of the region, it is orientated with south at the top with a slight re-orientation to include the port of Brest in Brittany. It extends from the Cap de la Hague in Normandy to Ushant off the Brittany coast. Portland Bill is also included, the only portion of southern England visible. The Channel Islands are illustrated with an oversized ‘Ornay’ (Alderney). Jacobsz’ chart first appeared in the ‘Zee-Spiegel’ which is largely a sea atlas of European waters. The second part including a chart of this region was first published in 1643, the completed work was published in 1644. It is believed that there might be an earlier issue. Koeman suggests that the lack of an imprint on it might indicate collaboration with other booksellers. At his death in 1650 this plate along with the others in the atlas were sold to Pieter Goos. Koeman records that for the 1662 English text edition several charts were altered of which this was one. There are several minor alterations but the most obvious is the framework to the title cartouche which was previously blank is now occupied by engraved lines. A new plate was introduced which forced the plate number lower right to be altered from ’37’ to ’38’. Provenance: Jonathan Potter Ltd.; private Jersey collection. Koeman (1967-70) IV Jac 14 no. 41, pp. 211-12, 231, refer Goos 17 no. 43; Sotheby’s Wardington sale 18 October 2005 lot 209 (illustrating the earlier state).
