The first edition in French. This important work describes Aubry de la Mottraye’s extensive travels over a 26-year period. A Huguenot, he journeyed through northern Europe to Tartary and the Levant. Some of the plates are notable for being the work of the engraver William Hogarth and are some of his earliest works. The plates illustrate the antiquities, objets d’art and scenes from Eastern life. The second part describes in greater detail Germany, Russia and Sweden. The maps depict the Mediterranean and Black Seas at the end of the first volume, and the Caspian Seas and Scandinavia in the second volume. Atabey 661; Blackmer 946; Brunet III, 801; Cox 1, p.77-7.
