Sandby (1725-1809) was one of the most famous artists who in the eighteenth century popularised the landscape genre. He was something of an exception being both an artist and engraver. He began his career as a military draftsman. A member of the Royal Academy he was one of the first proponents of auquatint engraving. This work was first issued in thirty six parts containing 3 plates each. Russell ‘Guide to British Topographical Prints’.
