David Burr’s ‘New Universal Atlas’ was first published in 1835. A second edition was published in 1836 after which the plates were acquired by J. Greenleaf. This uncommon map of Virginia covers of course West Virginia which did not yet exist. Burr was one of the most important of the early nineteenth century American cartographers. As topographer to the US Post Office he was able to illustrate a particularly accurate road structure. Ristow p. 106.
