A magnificent birds-eye view of Valetta, the capital of Malta as scene from the north-west. An ornate key in the upper right details 41 key locations. A further inset upper left contains a map of the islands surmounted by coat of arms held aloft by cherubs. A naval battle scene is placed offshore with a figurative title vignette lower left. This plate by Frederic de Wit is from the ‘Theatrum Praecipuorum Totius Europae Urbium’ and depicts the city as laid out by Francesco Laparelli and Geralamo Caesar. This plate was originally published by Joannes Jansonnius in his equally rare town book. Koeman 28 no. 69.
