FIRST EDITION, with dedication. William Tombleson’s ‘Picturesque Views on the Thames and Medway’ is one of the classic illustrated books of the river. It was first issued in parts and was announced in the October 1834 issue of the ‘Monthly Literary Advertiser’ as being complete. The book proved extremely popular. All but four of the views were drawn by Tombleson himself, a number are engraved by Henry Winkles but many others were involved. Despite this there is a nice uniform decorative design quality to them all. Adams (1983) no. 178; Cohen (1985) pp.184-185.
