The first part of Lucas Jansz Waghenaer’s ‘Spieghel der Zeevaerdt’ was printed in 1583 to critical acclaim. It was the first printed sea atlas. A second part followed the year after. In 1588 Sir Christopher Hatton commissioned the clerk to the Privy Council in England, Anthony Ashley, to prepare an English language version. For this a new series of plates were engraved in London by Dutch émigrés including Theadore de Bry, Jodocus Hondius and Augustine Ryther amongst others. This particular map is a fine example of the west coast of France including Isle de Re and Oleron. The nearby mainland displays La Rochelle and the town of Charente nearby. The lower right displays the mouth to the River Garonne leading to Bordeaux. This plate was engraved by de Bry bearing as it does his imprint lower left. It is an example of the second state published in 1605 in Amsterdam. Hondius had later acquired the plates and published them in an edition with some improvements. One of these was the addition of Dutch text to the maps. Koeman only cites TWO KNOWN COPIES of the atlas: University Library, Lund and a private American collection. Koeman IV Wag 13 no. 9.
