A privately printed work for the Duke of Northumberland. As the title indicates he instigated the surveys of ancient sites in the region as Patron of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. It consists of the plans of the military works, stations, camps, ancient routes, and other ancient remains. The first portion cover Hadrian’s Wall across the counties of Northumberland and Cumberland. The second section deals with Watling Street which covers Durham and Northumberland. This example is a presentation copy from the instigator of the project to the surveyor Henry MacLauchlan (1792-1882). He specialised in military, geological, and archaeological works. He joined the Ordnance Survey early in his career. Inserted loose are contemporary press cuttings from ‘The Newcastle Journal’, The Northern Daily Express’, and ‘The Gateshead Observer’. These indicate the actual issue as being 1858, not 1857 as found on the title page. Provenance: presentation inscription from the publisher to the surveyor himself ‘Presented to Henry MacLauchlan Esq. by The Duke of Northumberland 24th Novr. 1858’; Weinreb & Douwma Ltd.; private English collection.
