A fine and very rare map of Leinster from the first modern survey of the island. Known as the “Down Survey” it was executed 1655-56 by Petty but was not printed until 1685. The delays were down to the Dutch engravers, the English printers, lack on money and Petty’s own affairs elsewhere. Dublin is prominently in the centre of the map. Across the “Ireish Sea” is the coast of Wales. Refer Bonar-Law Ireland A1; Shirley “Atlases in the British Library” T.Pett 1a no. 2.
